Understanding Different Window Treatments

More often than not, the term ‘blinds’ refers to both blinds and shades. While all different types of blinds and shades serve the same basic function, there is a fundamental difference that separates the two. So, before we go any further, let’s make sure we understand what makes them different.

Blinds come in a variety of different types, materials, and sizes. All blinds have individual slats, which adjust up and down. Blinds can also tilt from side to side, which allows you to control the amount of light entering the room.
For most blinds, a cord located on one side of the blinds allow you to adjust the blinds up and down. A rod located on the other side of the blinds controls the tilt of the blinds, allowing you to open the slats, or close them.

Shades also come in many types, materials, and sizes. Unlike blinds, they’re made from one piece of material, instead of individual slats. For this reason, they can be adjusted up and down, but not side to side

Cellular shades may also be called called honeycomb shades.
Cellular shades are a window covering used to block or filter light and insulate windows to save energy. Cell size can vary. Cell shapes hold trapped air and create a barrier between the window surface and the a room. Since there's no test for shades they can't be ranked,

Windows and doors make up for approximately one-third of a home’s total thermal loss, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. This applies to heat loss in winter, and entry of undesired heat in summer. When air inside the room comes in contact with windows, it is cooled or warmed. By convection this air then circulates around the room. Cell shapes in the blinds hold trapped air and create a barrier between the window surface and the room. Shades, however, provide only slight control of air infiltration

Cellular shades can be constructed as single cell, double cell, or triple cell shades. Single cell fabric has an R-Value 1.6 and 2.5 imperial and double cell fabric has a metric R-value between2.8 and 4.  A 6 mm (¼”) thick single pane window has a metric R-value of 0.16 (0.91 imperial).

Unlike window blinds, which are made of hard materials, they are made of a soft paper- or cloth-like material. Typically spun lace and bonded polyester are used, but other fabrics can be used during the manufacturing process.
In common with all blinds cellular shades can reduce of  solar gain in summer, and provide black out for sleeping. Also as with other window treatments, they are raised and lowered horizontally with a string. Cordless cellular shades are available.

Bottom Up Top Down Cellular Shade

Cordless top down/bottom up shades can be raised and lowered from the top and the bottom for privacy and light control. If you have double hung windows you can also drop the top of the blind in the summer months to allow heat out of the home, since hot air rises. Also if you had a sunroom or an area with alot of glass, or possibly a hottub. You could create privacy from the shoulders down while allowing light into your home.

Blackout Roller Shades

The Benefits of Blackout Roller Shades

If you are in the market for new blinds for your home, particularly curtains for a bedroom, you should consider the benefits of blackout curtains. Blackout roller blinds are a very practical choice that will provide you with better sleep while saving you money. If you have young children, these curtains are particularly important to consider.

Blackout curtains will enhance any bedroom or living space.
The biggest benefit of blackout blinds is their ability to block light from entering a room. This is important for young children and people who work overnight shifts. Sleeping during the day can be difficult because of the sunlight; however, blackout curtains state that they can stop up to 99% of sunlight from entering into a room.

People who work overnight shifts are at risk for health problems due to their irregular sleeping habits. Switching to blackout curtains in your bedroom will reduce health risk by creating an ambience of night.
Alternatively, blackout curtains are ideal for creating complete darkness that you desire in your TV/movie room. They will block out any light that might ruin your home theater movie night. It’s important when purchasing your blackout curtains that you make sure they are big enough, so they can fully cover your window from top to bottom.
Another benefit of blackout roller blinds is their ability to reduce your energy costs. In most homes, 10-25% of thermal energy loss is from windows. However, with blackout blinds, your energy bill could be reduced up to 25%. During the winter, blackout curtains will help keep the heat in the room. While in summer, they have the ability to reflect heat out of the room. Both circumstances ensure that you are saving money on your energy expenses. Believe it or not but blackout blinds are probabaly the most energy efficient blind you can buy due to the solid non conductive material.
